This month’s wine tasting offers Holiday wines, whether you’re in need of an easy little something to pour for a big group at the office or a special bottle for a more select group of you and yours, we’ll be sampling wines that might be a fun part of your holiday season. Dave’s Winter Wonderland
2010 Field Recordings “Fiction” White Blend, California $18
While Andrew Jones is a man of many words, few of them are about his wines. He makes small amounts, particularly of the white (only 400 cases), but all you’ll find on the back label of the Fiction is, well, fiction. A refreshing flowery-nosed blend of Albariño, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Malvasia Bianca from which you’ll have to draw your own conclusions.
2010 Frostwatch “Kismet” (Sauvignon Blanc/Semillion, Bennet Valley $24
The 2010 Frostwatch Kismet is pale lemon-green with aromas of green apple, gooseberry, lemon-lime, white flowers, grass and a touch of sweet, woody spice. The palate is bone-dry with medium-plus body. There is zesty freshness and bold flavors of lime, grass, gooseberry, limestone and green apple skin. The finish is clean and tingly. Some aromatics and flavors in this wine may remind you of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, but the Kismet is riper, richer and much less pungent.
2009 Antica Terra Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley $53
Antica Terra displays the richness of the vintage, but it is paler, detailed and more concise. Its flavors are from the forest: small wild berries, chanterelles, yellow leaves. This wine includes more fruit from their estate and two extreme sites closer to the coast. In 2009 the stems from these sites ripened to become russet, dense and woody. The impressions of spice, woodlands and autumn come from this.
2010 Field Recordings “Fiction” Red Blend, Paso Robles $18
Andrew’s back with a red. This time, it’s Zinfandel and Tempranillo, blended with Grenache, Malbec, Touriga Nacional, Mourvedre and Syrah. Read the story and see what you think.
2009 TOR ROCK “ Hommage Allan” Hudson Vineyard Syrah, Carneros $45
The nose on the 2009 Hommage Allan screams of the Rhone, especially Hermitage. There are roasted meats/game/dark spices/cloves and a remarkable floral quality. On the palate the wine is medium/full weight with great concentration as well a fresh/bright/lifted middle.
2008 Diamond Ridge Petit Sirah, Lake County $24
This incredibly dense but well-mannered 100% Petite Sirah is packed with ripe blackberry and plum aromas nuanced with sage and exotic lavender perfume reflective of our unique terroir. This immensely satisfying wine sometimes tempts us to replant the whole vineyard in this variety which is so well suited to it. Thanks to the generous yet refined tannins, you can enjoy its massive flavors in its vibrant youth, or cellar it for added complexity.
