Dear Feastlings,
I’ve gradually become more accustomed to feeling quite busy while it remains so quiet around here. September is historically the slowest month for Tucson restaurants not situated near the University or a high school, and we’re still at triple-digit temperatures, so it’s no surprise to me that people are still getting out of town, or not returning from their summer arrangements. Even those who’ve returned are faced with back-to-school obligations on both their time and their money, and vacationers are returning home to the credit card bills for whatever they treated themselves to while pretending that they don’t live in essentially a low oven.
While in years past, we were able to offer a weekly changing menu full of requests of your favorite dishes, the inability to count on ingredients or be able to gauge how many of each particular item we’ll sell has hamstrung us for another summer.
We do, however, find occasion to remain occupied-

but trying to get the wines in for the special dinner we’re doing for Sonoran Restaurant Week, whose menu you’ll note is not yet posted.

Why? Because I’m still waiting for the wine to arrive so I can taste it and write the food pairings. But the wines are due in today, and I’m wearing my food-pairing shoes, and if they don’t arrive as late as our lobsters did yesterday, I ought to have a menu posted by sundown. We’ll see.
We’ve still got our weekly wine tastings going on as well,
and a couple of wine dinners brewing- one with Alex Durfee of importer Oliver McCrumb (Wednesday, October 16) and one with Phil and Kim Asmundson of Deep Sky Vineyard (Sunday- yes, Sunday- November 17,) and, of course, the one that’s less than a week away, a tour of Italy with our friend Jennifer Brown of Maverick Beverage Company (Tuesday, September 10, though I’m still waiting on those wines- come on, Maverick driver…)
Who knows what else there’ll be? Personally, I’m not quite certain, as I’m currently focused on all the aforementioned plans and events, but I’m terrible at saying no, so it wouldn’t surprise me if I’ve committed myself to something else in the near future. I suppose we’ll see.
